some open-source operating systems i truly like

  NetBSD - certainly the most portable operating system out there

  Gentoo Linux - a highly customizable linux distro, combined with a BSD style package system

if you use windows, i recommend you do this

• download and install firefox
  firefox is a modern, standards-compliant web browser that is not vulnerable to the many activex-based attacks against windows machines
  use this whenever possible, instead of internet explorer
• download, install and regularly update/run spybot s&d
  scans your computer for malware and cleans it up, if found
• if you are technically savvy, and want to lock down your machine (ensure there are no tcp/udp ports 'listening'), follow these instructions:
